Frances R. Mae was born to the late Daniel Webster Rhodes, Sr. and Tamar Dillahunt Rhodes of Kinston, NC. Frances was the forth of five children, Daniel Jr(deceased), Liddie(deceased), Lula(deceased) and Lorene(deceased). Frances was married to the late Edward L. Mae Sr. They had a beautiful, devoted life together.
She grew up in a very loving home where she enjoyed a happy childhood with her siblings and caring parents. Her parents laid a strong Christian foundation that carried Frances throughout her life. She was baptized at St. Augustus A.M.E. Zion church in Kinston, NC. After moving to Suffolk, Va. she became a member of Tabernacle Christian Church in Suffolk, Va. At church she served on various committees and ministries that included the seekers and Bible study.
Frances Mae graduated with honors from Adkin High School. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Science from Livingstone College where she graduated with honors. While at Livingstone College she was inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Frances began her teaching career as a math teacher at John F. Kennedy in Suffolk. From this successful start, she continued her math teaching career at both John Yates and Lakeland High School. She educated for over 30 years until she retired in 1995.
Among her hobbies, Frances loved music, reading, and cooking. She also loved her dogs and enjoyed taking care of them. Frances during her retirement also tutored neighborhood children in math.
Frances was called by God from labor to reward January 28,2023.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son Edward Mae Jr.(Tasha), Virginia, Grandson Edward Mae, III, Granddaughter Chawanda Skinner-Mae, Nephews: John J. Sutton III. Willie Rhodes, Julio "Jack"PenaSoto (Schnelle) Nieces: Beatrice A. Sutton and Patricia L. Rhodes, Great Nephew: Sabir Asheed Great Niece Carmen PenaSoto, Cousin Linda Moss other cousins, relatives and friends.
